We have responded to many major incidents in recent years including the tragic events at Lockerbie, Dunblane, Stockline and the terrorist attack at Glasgow airport.
During large scale incidents we work closely with other emergency services, hospitals and relevant government departments to save lives.
In these situations, our key priorities are:
- responding to the scene quickly and setting up a system to triage and treat patients based on their medical needs;
- treating and caring for anyone who may be injured;
- stabilising and transporting patients who need further treatment to hospital;
- supporting and treating any other emergency responders who may receive injuries in the course of their operations at the scene.
We also operate three Special Operations Response Teams (SORT) in the North, East and West of Scotland. These teams are specially trained and equipped to deal with major incidents of any kind as well as chemical, nuclear or radiological incidents. They operate tested procedures for the decontamination of patients in the event such an incident.
Our Risk and Resilience team develop and monitor all of the Service’s major incident response plans and continuously improve our emergency planning and business continuity arrangements.
We test our plans on a regular basis in partnership with other emergency responders.
