Scotland is home to the UK’s only publicly-funded air ambulance service. The Service operates two helicopters: one based in Glasgow and one in Inverness. In addition, there are two fixed wing aircraft: one based in Aberdeen Airport and one at Glasgow Airport.
The fleet has been purpose-built to a specification developed by the Scottish Ambulance Service and are operated by a private company on a contractual basis. The current contract expires on 31 March 2013.
A national consultation and engagement programme was launched in January this year to give the opportunity for all communities in Scotland, along with clinicians and patients, to give their views on the next generation of air ambulance service.
The second phase of consultation was completed on 8 July and the opportunity to submit comments has now closed. Over 500 respondents contributed to the consultation and their views will help influence improvements to the Air Ambulance Service.
