Patient Focus Public Involvement

In a patient-focused NHS, listening to and acting upon the views of patients, carers and local communities will be given the same priority as clinical standards and financial performance. A patient-focused NHS is designed to meet the needs and wishes of individuals and will:

  • listen and talk to patients, carers and the public;
  • know and understand the needs of people using the service;
  • keep patients and carers informed about services;
  • involve patients in decisions about their care and treatment;
  • have clear, explicit standards of service;
  • be polite and treat people with respect;
  • be able to respond to the particular needs of each patient and carer;
  • ensure effective action is taken to improve services;
  • involving people in decisions about planning, delivering and improving health services is a duty of NHS Boards.

You can be involved in the development of the NHS if you are:

  • a patient
  • a carer
  • a member of the public who may use services in the future
  • a representative of patients and the public.

The Assessment process

The Scottish Health Council was set up in 2005 to assess NHS Boards’ and Special Health Boards’ performance in respect to Patient Focus and Public Involvement Activity.

As part of this self-assessment Boards are asked to produce a short summary self-assessment for 2009/2010.

These documents form the Self-Assessment Report and are in the following format:-

  • summary providing an overview of progress for 2009/2010;
  • case Studies show casing good examples of involving patients and the public throughout the year.

The Scottish Health Council guidance states that members of the public, patients and members of Public Partnership For a (PPF) should be involved in selecting six case studies of good practice to be included in the self-assessment report.

What to Expect at the Meeting

At the meeting participants will be provided with information on the Local Delivery Plan and strategic priorities and provided with an overview of the Service.

Discussion with take place around the case studies to be considered and participants will be asked to vote for six out of the 10 case studies.
