999 is 80 years old

 Friday 30 June 2017

999 celebrates its 80th anniversary today.  First introduced in London in 1937 following a fatal fire, 999 is the world’s oldest emergency call handling system. Glasgow became the second city to have the service in 1938.

Today, millions of 999 calls are received each year with our own ambulance control centres handling more than 550,000.
