Rest breaks

The Service operates a rest break policy, agreed in partnership with staff representatives, that ensures patient safety while at the same time recognising staff’s welfare needs for a break during their shift.

This means that in the case of a potentially immediately life threatening incident, an ambulance crew will be interrupted during their break if they are the nearest available response.

Any crews that are interrupted during their break will complete the rest period once they have cleared from the incident. There are arrangements in place in Ambulance Control Centres monitor the implementation of rest break procedures throughout every shift.
