Paramedic Training

Diploma of Higher Education in Paramedic Practice

Course Description

The Diploma of Higher Education (Dip HE) in Paramedic Practice is a two year programme delivered by the Scottish Ambulance Academy (SAA) and accredited by Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU). The Dip HE is awarded at Scottish Credit & Qualification Framework (SCQF) level 8, with successful completion leading to eligibility to apply for registration as a Paramedic with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

During year 1 of the programme, learners will spend the first 13 weeks at the Scottish Ambulance Academy  where they will complete corporate and programme inductions in week one, followed by 10 weeks of learning across a range of modules. The year 1 modules are Foundations for Clinical Practice, Interprofessional Education, Pathophysiology, Clinical Skills and Patient Assessment and Management. Successful completion of a two week assessment period leads to 39 weeks in practice placement in ambulance and wider healthcare environments. The total required learning time in year one is 1500 hours.

For Year 2 of the programme, learners will return to the Scottish Ambulance Academy for two five weeks teaching blocks, each followed by 21 weeks of practice placement. Modules delivered in year 2 build on the principles of year 1. Modules are Pathophysiology for Paramedics, Leadership and Mentoring, Developing Paramedic Practice, Clinical Skills for Paramedics and Patient Assessment and Management for Paramedic Practice.

It is possible to ‘step off’ after year one with an exit award of Certificate of Higher Education in Ambulance Studies. This award does not lead to eligibility to apply for registration as a Paramedic with the HCPC. The maximum length of time that learners can step off from year one before returning for year two is five years, allowing a maximum completion time frame of seven years.
