About Us

The Scottish Ambulance Service serves all of Scotland and is a Special Health Board funded directly by the Health Department of the Scottish Executive.

We are the frontline of the NHS in Scotland and cover the largest geographic area of any ambulance service in the UK.

We have two main functions - the provision of an Accident and Emergency service to respond to 999 calls and the Non-Emergency Service, which performs an essential role in taking patients to and from their hospital appointments.

An Air Wing consisting of two helicopters and four fixed wing aircraft provides emergency response and invaluable hospital transfer for remote areas.

The service is managed by a Board made up of a non-executive chairman, seven non-executive directors and a chief executive and four executive directors. Our services are delivered locally across Scotland in six divisions.

In 2002 we embarked upon a five-year modernisation programme that will deliver improvements across every aspect of our service.
