Ambulance Shift Cover

Ambulance cover across the country is delivered by staff who work a shift rota system. Shift rotas operate in different patterns around the country in order to best match the profile of demand in the local area.
If staff are unable to come to work at short notice through illness or some other reason, then it can be difficult to arrange a replacement and it is possible that the shift will not be covered. This is the exception rather than the rule and wherever possible managers will always try to bring in another member of staff to cover the shift. In stations that operate with small pools of staff, particularly in more rural areas, the impact of a late call off or prolonged sickness can be greater because relief cover has to be sought from much further away.  In any such situation, local operations teams will continue to move ambulances around a geographic area between stations in anticipation of calls so that cover is maintained.
