On Call Working

On call working operates in more remote and rural parts of the country where ambulance demand is generally lower. In recent years the Service has worked with staff to reduce on call working by more than a third across Scotland and continues to identify opportunities for further reduction. In the areas where on call operates, staff agree to be available to be called out from home during specific time periods. Staff who work on call receive a flat rate of payment for their availability.  They will also receive a further payment depending if, and how often they are called out. These new arrangements for on call working in NHS Scotland came into effect on 1 October 2012.
