It is important to note – EMRS stands for Emergency Medical Retrieval Service, which is a branch within ScotSTAR, while PICT is an acronym for Paramedic Intervention and Critical Care Team. In essence, EMRS and ScotSTAR is a broader service that can attend pre-hospital incidents and transport critically ill or injured patients between tertiary care facilities; while PICTs are specialised teams that solely provide advanced pre-hospital care, particularly in the Highlands and Moray.
Although the Scottish Ambulance Service allocates incidents to both teams and can provide the number of incidents attended by each team, PICT are not managed by the Scottish Ambulance Service and therefore would not hold any further information on this service. Please see the attached data sheet detailing the information requested from 01/01/2022 - 31/03/2025. This information has been provided over three tabs.
The first tab details the number of incidents that were attended by PICT and EMRS. The EMRS team are the only team within ScotSTAR that attend unscheduled pre-hospital visits. All other ScotSTAR teams do not attend incidents and facilitate intra-hospital transfers.
The second has the information provided in two tables. The first table details the number of paediatric incidents (16 or younger) that were attended in a pre-hospital emergency by the EMRS team. The second table details the number of paediatric incidents attended by ScotSTAR that were Intra-hospital transfers.
The third tab details the number of EMRS completed primary missions for paediatric patients (16 or younger) broken down by year and health board.
For the given data, you will see that some of the figures are shown as, five or less than five, please note that this figure has been suppressed because the statistical value is less than five. The Scottish Ambulance service has a duty, under the Data Protection Act to avoid directly or indirectly revealing any personal details. It is therefore widely understood that provision of statistics on small numbers, five or less are statistically suppressed upon disclosure.
