Information Requested

Would you be able to let me know if under the new BSc education for paramedics if they are able to carry out endotracheal intubation on qualifying. Based on the basic degree and not any additional training.

Response

The Scottish Ambulance Service supports a stepwise approach to airway management; this is not a one-way process. Tracheal intubation as the initial airway is not recommended.

Newly Qualified Paramedics joining the Scottish Ambulance Service are not permitted to carry out endotracheal intubation.  Only Advanced Practitioners in Critical Care and Air Ambulance Paramedics have intubation within their scope of practice.
