Response

Guidance on the issuance of the Coronation Medal was received from the Government - Coronation Medal to go to Armed Forces and frontline emergency service workers - GOV.UK

  1. Who and what staff within the service is eligible to receive a medal?

Frontline emergency personnel who have been in paid service, retained or in a voluntary capacity, dealing with emergencies (A&E) as part of their conditions of service, and completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023; this excludes ACC and bank staff.

Those who will receive the Medal for the Coronation of Their Majesties The King and Queen Consort are:

  • Individuals who have actively contributed to the official Coronation events in Westminster Abbey and processions, and other officially recognised ceremonial Coronation events;
  • Serving members of the Armed Forces who have completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023 or participate in Armed Forces Coronation events during the course of 2023;
  • Frontline emergency personnel who have been in paid service, retained or in a voluntary capacity, dealing with emergencies as part of their conditions of service, and completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023;
  • Operational prison services personnel who are publicly employed and who have completed five full calendar years of service on 6 May 2023;
  • Living individual recipients of the George Cross or of the Victoria Cross.

  1. Are Ambulance Bank Drivers Eligible?

No bank staff are not eligible for medals/coins.

  1. How many bank drivers are currently employed by the Ambulance service?

There are currently 783 bank workers contracted within the Scottish Ambulance Service.

  1. If a bank driver fits the service criteria why specifically are they not being issued a medal? (Please quote specifically if referring to 3rd party)

This is as per the Royal Warrant issued by the Royal Household as Bank drivers are not frontline emergency staff in the ambulance service.

  1. Who made this decision and why?

We have applied section 17 of the Freedom of Information Scotland Act 2002 as information not held.  This decision was made out with SAS.

  1. Will bank drivers be issued with an alternative coin if refused the medal?

There are currently no plans to issue coins to Bank staff as there is no way to calculate the minimum 5years of service as bank staff may not complete the adequate hours for a year's work.
