I am writing to you under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 to request the following information from you. We are keen to ensure we are prepared when this is due to come to market or when the contract expires. In relation to the Delivery, Collection, Transportation, Treatment and Disposal of Clinical Waste from NHS Hospitals.  

 

Please can you advise … • Who is your provider for clinical waste, collection and disposal from the hospitals? • Which internal department manages this contract? • What is the contract term, including start and expiry date? • When and how is the contract likely to be renewed or come to market? • Do you use a framework or your own tender etc? • Current contract spend for clinical waste ? • Current volumes of each type of waste? • What goals and targets are related to the contract? • How is the current provider performing in the contract?

Who is your provider for clinical waste, collection and disposal from the hospitals?   

The Scottish Ambulance Service is currently contracted with SRCL at two hospital sites. 

 

Which internal department manages this contract? - Procurement 

What is the contract term, including start and expiry date? - The start date is 1st April 2024, on a 12month rolling contract.

For Johnstone the agreement is for the uplift of 1 x 360 litre bin every 2 weeks and the annual cost is £763.88 (£29.38 per uplift).  There is also a £35 minimum waste collection charge (per collection) and a £16 Hazardous Waste Consignment Fee (per collection). 

  

For Newbridge the agreement is for the uplift of 1 x 360 litre bin every 4 weeks and the annual cost is £381.94 (£29.38 per uplift) and again there is also a £35 minimum waste collection charge (per collection) and a £16 Hazardous Waste Consignment Fee (per collection).

  • How is the current provider performing in the contract?

The Scottish Ambulance Service has applied section 33(1)(b) of the Freedom of Information Scotland Act 2002 as commercially Sensitive.  Revealing goals and targets contained in the contract or how the current contractor is performing; could cause substantial harm to the commercial interests of the Scottish Ambulance Service and our current contractor.  Revealing this information could result in it being used by competitors and undermine negotiations in future contracts.   

The Scottish Ambulance Service has the applicable KPI’s (Key Performance Indicators) on the service delivery and performance of the contract are in place.  Operational performance is managed as part of the scheduled operational use of the service; any issues or concerns will also be dealt with at performance review meetings.
