Information Requested

Can you tell me how many ambulances responding to emergency calls in Scotland delivered a patient to a hospital in England, broken down by each year - 2023, 2024 and 2025. Could you tell me the location where they were transported from and where they were transported to please. Could you also provide the reason for each journey. 

Response

Please see the attached sheet detailing the number of times a Scottish Ambulance Service emergency ambulance has conveyed a patient to a hospital in England from 01/01/2023 - 30/09/2025. The hospitals where a patient was conveyed to by a SAS crew in England are: 

  • Cumberland Infirmary (Carlisle)
  • Newcastle General Hospital (Newcastle)
  • Royal Victoria Infirmary (Newcastle)
  • Berwick Infirmary (Berwick-upon-Tweed)

Table 1 details incident sub-division before conveyance to England. 

Table 2 details the incidents broken down by receiving hospital 

Table 3 details the incidents conveyed to England broken down by the chief complaint. 

For the given data, you will see that some of the figures are shown as, five or less than five, please note that this figure has been suppressed because the statistical value is less than five. The Scottish Ambulance service has a duty, under the Data Protection Act to avoid directly or indirectly revealing any personal details. It is therefore widely understood that provision of statistics on small numbers, five or less are statistically suppressed upon disclosure.
