Information Requested

I would like to request any policies and/or guidelines used in your the healthcare of infants who are intersex/have a difference or disorder of sexual development, or have ambiguous genitalia at birth (such as clitoromegaly, microphallus or other atypicality). If the Scottish Ambulance Service does not have guidelines or policies relating to the above, please let me know.

Response

The Scottish Ambulance Service (SAS) does not hold specific policies for these presentations.  It is for this reason we have applied section 17 of the Freedom of Information Scotland Act 2002 as information not held.

The Scottish Ambulance Service clinicians follow the guidelines set out by the Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee (JRCALC – Joint Royal Colleges Ambulance Liaison Committee). Under the Diversity and Equality guidelines our crews are asked to consider that there are people that do not fit the binary physical classification of male and female and may need to ask the patient about how the condition affects them and if they have any particular treatments.  In the case of infants, SAS clinicians would seek advice from the attending/referring clinicians or the parent/guardian.
