Response

Under the Freedom of Information (Scotland) Act 2002 (FOISA), public authorities are required to provide access to recorded information that is held at the time of the request. FOISA does not require an authority to create new information, carry out analysis it does not already hold, or generate records that do not exist. If the information requested is not held in a recorded form, the authority must issue a notice under Section 17 of FOISA confirming that the information is not held.

The Scottish Ambulance Service does not hold information request in question 1 or 2 of your request, it is for this reason we have applied section 17 of FOISA, as information not held.

The Scottish Ambulance Service requires newly qualified paramedics to complete a practical physical assessment that mirrors real operational tasks. This includes stepping with 10kg, completing two minutes of chest compressions, assembling a Bag‑Valve‑Mask, and undertaking a three‑minute stair‑style test carrying 30kg. A standard 20cm step height is used across all sites, candidates may wear weight‑lifting gloves for grip, and one rest break is allowed during the 30kg carry. The test must be completed as demonstrated, meaning candidates cannot alter the step height or cadence, adjust the weights, use alternative equipment, skip stages, or receive physical assistance during any part of the test. These rules ensure the assessment is applied consistently, reflects realistic job demands, and focuses solely on whether candidates can safely perform essential physical tasks.
