There are several different makes and models of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) available on the market. While they may vary in appearance, all AEDs operate in a similar manner and are supplied by a range of manufacturers.
The Scottish Ambulance Service is unable to recommend a specific make or model for your community’s needs. However, we can recommend considering not only the initial purchase cost, but also the ongoing costs for replacement consumables such as pads and batteries, which are essential for keeping the device ready for use.
Storage Cabinets
There are many types of AED storage cabinets available, and the market continues to grow with new products regularly introduced by various manufacturers.
If you plan to install an AED outdoors, it’s essential to choose a cabinet that offers adequate protection against environmental conditions. Outdoor AED cabinets should be temperature-controlled to keep the device within its recommended range, preserving battery life and optimal function.
We recommend an unlocked outdoor cabinet so that your defibrillator is easy to get in an emergency. However, if you do choose a locked cabinet, you can add the access code when you register your defibrillator on The Circuit, the national defibrillator network.
Funding
The Scottish Ambulance Service is unable to fund public access defibrillators for communities. The responsibility for purchasing and maintaining an AED lies with the individual, community group, or organisation seeking to install one.
